It was a tough week for Watkins Memorial High School sports.

A Warrior near the end of the season.
A Warrior near the end of the season.

Three teams made the playoffs. Three teams lost: the volleyball team, the soccer team, and the football team.

They all worked hard enough for months to extend their regular seasons and have the privilege of facing some of the best competition in the state of Ohio.

Each team gave their best effort.

It wasn’t until the end of the football game that it dawned on us what really happened this week. While looking at the stands, there were a lot of familiar faces: parents, students, alumni, friends.

In some cases, there were as many people in the stands that traveled to watch Watkins play as the home team had sitting on their side.

We paid our taxes and paid our admission and watched as the band played, the fans cheered, the coaches instructed, the cheerleaders yelled. Some of us drove many miles to practices and meals and games. We were all part of something. Together.

When the games were over, the scoreboards were not on our side. But we gathered.

Some of us talked about the what-ifs from the games. Some of us thought about next year. Some of us hugged. Some of us drove back. Some of us wept. Some of us stayed until the lights were going off.

But in each game, we all stood together.

More than anything else that happened on the field of battle, that stood out. We are together. We are Warriors. This is our home.
